How to Correct Mistakes on Your Credit Report

Once you have received a copy of your credit report, each reporting agency will have specific instructions on disputes or errors.  General, you must write the credit bureau and advise them of the error or dispute.  You may need to provide proof that the bill was paid or other information about the claim or dispute.  The credit bureau will then contact the provider who reported the information, and that provider will have 30 days to respond.  If the provider of credit agrees that there is an error, it will instruct the credit bureau to delete the item from your credit report. You should allow at least 30 days after you have notified a credit bureau of an error in your credit report for that error to be investigated and resolve.  It may take longer depending upon the nature of the error and the investigation to be done.

Dispute letter to be sent direct to creditor.

Dear Sir/Madam:
I received a copy of my credit report to find the following items to be in error.  See the attached copy of the credit report.  Below I have explained the discrepancies in the numbered entries:

By the provisions of 15 USC Section 1681i of the Fair Credit Reporting Act of 1970, I demand that these items be reinvestigated and deleted from my record.  Send me names and addresses of individuals you contacted so I may follow up.
Since 30 days from receipt of this letter is your allotted time under the law to re-verify these entries, it should be understood that failure to do so within that 30-day period constitutes reason to promptly delete the information from my file (FCRA 15 USC s1681 (5) (a).
Also, pursuant to 15 USC s1681i (6) (A) of the Fair Credit Reporting Act, please notify me when the items have been deleted.  You may send an updated copy of my credit report to the below address.  According to the provisions of 15 USC Section 1681j, there should be no charge for this notification.
Sincerely,
